As this school year comes to an end, fall is just around the corner. And you know what that means— its time to start designing your college dorm room!! We all know that the transition from your childhood bedroom to a dorm room can feel really overwhelming… its exciting, scary, nerve-racking, etc. etc.! But not to worry, we’re here to help make sure you’re all set! Keep reading to find out how you should approach designing your dorm room, what you will need to make it feel like home, and what additional items we think are most important in prepping you for your new everyday life!
DETERMINE YOUR AESTHETIC
The first step in approaching the design of your college dorm room is to determine your aesthetic. Do you prefer a neutral environment or a colorful one? Are you more drawn to geometric patterns or do you prefer something a little more organic? Maybe you prefer geometric neutrals and your future roommate prefers organic colors!! Whatever the case, its SO important that you work together to find a balance that works for each of you. If you introduce too many different colors/ patterns into a space as confined as a dorm room, it can begin to feel a little chaotic. Have an honest conversation with your roommate about how you’re wanting the room to make you feel, find a compromise on the color palette and theme that you’re going to go off of, and start choosing your decor!

PRIORITIZE COMFORT
Right now your dorm room may just seem like it will be a fun new place to stay and hangout with friends… but its so much more!!! This room will become your home away from home. The place you go to relax and have your you time, the place you go to call your family, study for exams, etc.! It should be the most comfortable place on campus for you! To make sure of this, we suggest really investing in things like quality, comfortable bedding. At Lambert Home, we’ve hand selected our favorite bedding options for your dorm room and they’re available right here in our store! Come by and check them out!!
With all of the changes that come with going off to college for the first time, its also important that you design a space that will bring you emotional comfort. Try to make it feel like a reflection of who you are and add personal touches that make it feel familiar to you!
MAKE A CHECKLIST
Before blindly going into purchasing things for your dorm room, make a check list of the things you will need/want to make int come together! Of course this list will include things like pillows and blankets that we all use everyday, but also consider what items will make the room as functional as possible for how you will use it. We want to design with looks AND function in mind! If you prefer to lounge or do homework on a sofa rather than in your bed, for instance, add seating to your check list! If I were to make a list, it would look something like: sheets, comforter, blanket, sleeping pillows, throw pillows, table lamp, rug, picture frames, scent diffuser, settee, lift-lid ottoman, faux plants, bath accessories!
