6 Dos & Don’ts of Bedroom Design

People tend to put bedrooms low on the remodel priority list because they’re private spaces. Not every guest will peek into these rooms, and certainly very few will spend any time in there. So, we get it! But that doesn’t mean you should neglect designing the bedroom of your dreams. (Pun totally intended.) Your bedroom is the one space in the house that is wholly for you - you deserve to love it! To make things simple, we’ve put together a short list of dos and don’ts to help you create a space you love to unwind in.

DO: Select a relaxing color palette for your bedroom.

When designing your bedroom, your kids’ bedrooms, and even your guest bedrooms, you may find yourself gravitating to heavier colors and patterns than you would in another room of the house. However, it’s absolutely crucial that you remember that this is a space to unwind! That doesn’t mean you can’t use colors you love, but it may mean you should select a softer, more relaxing version of that color. Or, like in the example below, you can try using your favorite color in smaller doses to give you that little bit of energy and life in your resting space. Remember: it’s about finding the perfect balance for you!

DON’T: Use your bedroom as the catch-all space.

Sometimes, when people have guests over, or do their spring cleaning, the instinct is to get all clutter out of the shared spaces. Makes sense, right? But then, people often find that they lose steam when it comes to organizing it! Enter: the piles. Whether it be a rogue catch-all chair, or junk mail on the dresser, do not let this happen to you! Your bedroom is your space to unwind at the end of the day, not a space for you to be reminded of the million other things you want to get done tomorrow. Take an hour this weekend and create an organization system. You can thank us later!

DO: Invest in quality bedroom furniture.

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: you need to be investing in durable, timeless, and beautiful furniture! Good-quality furniture can save you money over time because you won’t need to replace it every few years. And let’s talk about aesthetics: if you select timeless bedroom furniture, you won’t want to replace it frequently, either! So we really don’t recommend chasing fads when purchasing furniture. Trust us - the perfect balance between timeless, beautiful, and well-made does exist. And it’s so worth it!

DON’T: Neglect window treatments.

For some reason, a common design mistake we see is not using window treatments in bedrooms. People typically add blinds and call it sufficient, but they’re missing out on a really easy point to elevate a room. Nothing makes a bedroom feel high-end and finished quite like a beautiful curtain. This is also a good opportunity to go with more affordable brands. As long as the fabric looks nice, it will do the trick!

The most important thing to remember when hanging curtains in any space: make sure they hang right above the ground. They shouldn’t be slouching on the ground, or hanging more than a couple of inches high. Of course you can get fancy, if you want to make your walls look higher, and hang longer curtains as high as they can go! Just make sure they are the correct length, or you will be doing yourself a disservice.

DO: Select bedding that will last through the seasons.

This tip is probably one of the few that can fall under the category of personal preference. If you love switching out your comforters every season, have at it! Otherwise, we recommend a comforter that you can layer in the winter, but that won’t be too heavy in the summer. We live in Texas! We’ve got to think of these things!!

One thing that doesn’t fall under personal preference? Invest in good-quality sheets! You spend so many hours each year in your sheets, you need to get a set that takes care of your skin and body. You don’t want to have to keep replacing them because the cheap ones just don’t last. Do the math - buying better quality sheets once will be more affordable than replacing cheap sheets frequently!

DON’T: Use furniture that’s too big for the space.

If you’re not in your long-term home, this can be a hard one! Selecting furniture that fits in your space can be tricky, because furniture that’s too large will make your space feel smaller and more cramped, whereas furniture that’s too small can negatively affect your space too. Remember, your bedroom is the one space in your home that is wholly yours. It’s your safe space to unwind at the end of hard days, and to reflect at the end of good days! Make sure your furniture is facilitating that relaxation and not putting you in a negative headspace.
