The Difference Between Interior Designers & Decorators
The terms interior designer and interior decorator are often used interchangeably but they actually have quite different roles and responsibilities! Today I’m going to walk you through some of the key differences between the two roles and help you understand why hiring an interior designer is worth the investment!
What is an interior designer?
An interior designer is someone with a formal education, or degree, in design. They’ve studied architecture, lighting, color theories, furniture design, and have been taught based on strict codes and regulations that lend themselves to creating safe and functional interiors. Not to mention, they also have a great eye for aesthetics!!
Designers are qualified to make structural changes to a space. This may involve space planning to move walls around or planning electrical and plumbing systems, which is all pretty complex work! Working with a designer is really beneficial when dealing with an interior design project because all aspects of the work - from safety to functionality to aesthetics - will be considered in detail. It can be overwhelming without professional help!!!
What is an interior decorator?
An interior decorator is someone who naturally has a good eye for aesthetics and beauty, but who hasn’t necessarily received a formal education in design. This isn’t to say that they aren’t extremely talented at what they do, their focus just tends to be on the less complex aspects of design. Interior decorators don’t have the certifications to make structural adjustments to a space like designers do, for example. If you’re looking for help re-styling a space or shopping for new decor, an interior decorator may be just what you need!
Why is hiring an interior designer worth your money?
Hiring an interior designer for their services could require more of an investment than an interior decorator because they provide a wider range of services! The roles of an interior designer range from decorating a space to space planning and proposing structural alterations, whereas a decorator’s role is primarily focused on aesthetics.
Designers think through all of the details of an interior project, from moving electrical and plumbing systems to moving table lamps, as well as setting the expectations for the project’s work! Whether its your home, where you come to find peace and comfort at the end of the day, or your place of work, that you spend hours in with daily visitors, you deserve to love the interiors in your life!!
